Careerin
A web platform encouraging job seekers to showcase their personality through videos.
Client: Careerin
Project: Video recording feature
Role: UX Researcher, Visual Designer
Tools: Figma, Notion, Miro
Time: 4 weeks (February-March 2021)
Careerin partnered with IterateUX for a 4-week hackathon, matching a group of 4 designers with 2 front end developers. While I was involved in the whole process, I headed the design and handoff.
Careerin is a job platform that allows candidates to search and connect with roles in tech.
The problem space we explored is that job seekers can’t really show their personality or passion in a text based resume, which makes them hard to stand out from other candidates.
Our goal is to build a 1-minute video recording feature within the Careerin website that helps candidates showcase who they are:
- User Interviews
- User Survey
- Competitor Audits
- Affinty Mapping
- User Stories
People who have been in the process of the job search felt deflated, exhausted, and did not want to add yet another layer of impression by way of video if it was not worth the investment of their time and effort.
Candidates wanted support with what they would say or how they can show their personalities in a video recording.
- It was important to limit the amount of screens a candidate has to navigate through so as to not overwhelm
- Based on research, it was clear that transparent/succinct copy, helpful tips, and example videos will largely contribute to a positive user experience
- Keeping the video feature as simple and easy to use as possible with little to no editing options would ensure a level playing field and allow candidates to focus on content rather than the logistics of tools
60% of participants continuously thought ahead at each screen they interacted with, expecting to see information or tools that we designed at a later point in the user flow, which caused some hesitancy when considering moving forward, as they felt they weren’t ready to record until they were prepared.
While all of the participants loved the text box and script feature to help prepare for their video, 60% of them were concerned about the potential redundancy of the “mad-lib style” script and that multiple candidates would sound too similar.

What Went Well
Constraints
Remote teamwork using Notion, Google Meet, Swit
Prioritize sociopolitical factors in design decisions
Optimistic user feedback
Adapting designs and understanding the constraints developers face
We were instructed by the client to use Bubble, a no-code platform, that created a lot of developmental constraints
Explore web applications that allow for alternate customization methods of features with CSS/HTML
Next Steps
Expand the "recommendations" feature, as 100% of our user testing participants felt that a recommendation from a colleague or former employer is more impactful than a self-recorded video
Add supplemental features for recruiters and hiring managers
Mobile responsiveness
Additional steps/features that emphasize accessibility
Adding an audio-only feature
Subtitles/captions to support video with or without audio
